In the causation is not correlation part of the world, a new meme is making the rounds on social media networks with the headline, “Your Bra May Be Killing You.” The meme and the link to the article at inquisitr.com claims that science has proven that wearing a bra increases a woman’s chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Among the claims related to this meme are these two:
CLAIM: Over the past 20 years 2,000,000 women in the US alone have gotten breast cancer who may have prevented it by simply loosening their bra and wearing it less time each day.
FACT: Men and women who are overweight are at higher risk of developing breast cancer risk.
And women with large breasts are at higher risk of developing breast cancer.
Women who are overweight are more likely to have larger breasts, and as a result of having larger breasts, they are more likely to wear a bra and for long periods of time each day. Women who develop large breasts as young girls are also more likely to wear a bra and for long periods of time each day.
CLAIM: Bras cause breast cancer by obstructing lymph flow and causing lymphatic constriction.
FACT: Just as blood vessels are intricate networks of hollow tubes that transport blood throughout the body, lymph vessels are equally intricate networks of hollow tubes that transport lymph throughout the body.
Blood vessels are composed of arteries, arterioles, venules, veins, and capillaries; lymph vessels are composed of trunks, veins, capillaries, and ducts.
Lymph vessels are generally found running alongside blood vessels.
QUESTION TO PONDER: If wearing a bra causes “breast cancer by obstructing lymph flow” shouldn’t it stand to reason that wearing a bra should also cause heart attacks by obstructing blood flow?
